Atlas of the Heart
Brené Brown
Book report:
Brené defines 87 emotions here organized by vignettes such as “Places we go when things don’t go as planned” in which she defines boredom, disappointment, expectations, resignation, regret, discouragement, and frustration.
I often use the distinction she makes between Fitting in and Belonging:
“Belonging is being somewhere where you want to be, and they want you. Fitting in is being somewhere you want to be, but they don’t care one way or the other.” Page 162 “Belonging is being accepted for you. Fitting in is being accepted for being like everyone else.” Page 163
My extension of her definition is: The bridge between Fitting In and Belonging is Connection.
Disconnection is an unavoidable occurrence in every connection, and reconnection is an important tool. There are many reconnection enablers including apology, empathy.
