Quick summary:

A groundbreaking work in popular psychology, Daniel Goleman brought the term "Emotional Intelligence" or "EQ" into our businesses.

Book report:

Goleman argues "intelligence" is too narrow a frame. For a team to truly thrive, for the best ideas to come out, the members of a team need to feel safe enough to be vulnerable - to share the ideas they have that may seem outlandish, innovation relies on the outlandish idea. I always thought this tied nicely to Patrick Lencioni's two dimensions from Four Obsessions of an Extraordinary Executive:

  1. "Is my business smart?" (IQ)
  2. "Is my business healthy?" (EQ)
That safety is created by brilliant leaders (IQ) who can be the thermostat in the room (EQ). This is the book that popularized these ideas, and Goleman has spoken to every major business since.
