Quick summary:

This book was handed to my by the first "Level 5 Leader" I've ever met who uses it as the leadership handbook at her company. This book is both lofty and practical. The best book I’ve ever read on the topic of leadership and I remember writing 20 pages of notes in the first 7 pages.

Book report:

The authors develop the UML, the "Universal Model of Leadership" which directly implementable (though not effortless!). It's a complete system for self-development, or organizational development. It's a complete leadership system. In it they introduce the four promises of leadership which is a simple framework of self-explanatory maxims, brilliantly expanded on in the book:

  • Promise 1: Set the right direction and create meaningful work
  • Promise 2: Engage all stakeholders and hold them accountable
  • Promise 3: Ensure that processes and systems facilitate focus and execution
  • Promise 4: Lead effectively
