Quick summary:

With awareness of the two mindsets - growth and fixed - we can improve every aspect of our life.

Book report:

This book is REQUIRED READING for all managers at Google as described in their Project Aristotle. Dweck lays out three important concepts in this book:

  1. There are two types of mindsets. Growth and Fixed.
    1. A Fixed Mindset means we believe our strengths are set in stone. So we are constantly trying to prove ourselves, and when we fail we say "I'm not good at."
    2. A Growth Mindset means we believe our strengths can be cultivated through our own actions, through feedback, through practice. When we fail we say "Here is an opportunity to learn."
  2. The same person can have different mindsets in different topics.
  3. We can change our mindset.
Dweck uses the example of Michael Jordan who was cut from his sophomore basketball team for not being good enough at defense, shooting or ball handling. He took that feedback and practiced until his former weakness of defense, shooting, and ball handling put him in the Baseketball Hall of Fame. That's a Growth Mindset right there!
