Video: Mitigating Conflict with Negotation

I’ll integrate two frameworks for mitigating conflict in this brief post and video:

  • Conflict 101
  • Negotiation 101.

Conflict 101 👨‍🏫

From Fred Kofman’s brilliant book Conscious Business:

We need three conditions in order for conflict to exist:

  1. A disagreement
  2. Scarcity
  3. A lack of agreed upon decision process for distributing the scarce resource

If we can solve any 1 condition, we can resolve the entire conflict!

I’ll show how this framework alone can be used to mitigate the conflict introduced by having only 1 cookie in the house in the video below.

Negotiation 101 👨🏼‍🏫

Negotation isn’t just for contracts and buying big ticket items. Just about any conversation is a negotation.

Know the six six outcomes to any deal:

  1. 😊😢Win-Lose
  2.  😢😊Lose-Win
  3.  😢😢Lose-Lose
  4.  😊😊Win-Win
  5.  🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♂️No Deal
  6.  🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♂️Compromise

The steps:

  1. Seperate the interest fromt the party. Negotate the interest, not the other person.
    • If you could just buy the thing, you wouldn’t need to negoation.
    • Therefor the other person is your partner, not an adversary.
  2. Determine the interests beyond the position.
    • If you just argue positions, you’ll never make progress.
    • You need to understand your intent as well!
  3. Generate multiple solutions satisfying the interests of all parties
  4. Decide
    • Selecing a solution that satisfies the interest of all parties is the definition of Win-Win

I show how this can be used to mitigate a conflict between two chefs vying for one lemon in the video.
